Caleb Poon
Hi! My name is Caleb Poon, and I was born in El Paso, Texas. When I was one, I moved to Sacramento, and my parents brought me to SCBC (Sacramento Chinese Baptist Church). At the young age of four, my father passed away from liver cancer. Since I was so young, I didn't understand the meaning of death, and I didn't really know why my father left this earth. The church body at SCBC was extremely loving and aided my family in practical ways like mowing the lawn, helping fix things around the house, and providing financially for my brother and me. Even though my family wasn't at this church for a very long time, I could see Christ's love flowing out from their actions.
I grew up at SCBC and attended Sunday School and Crusaders, which was the 3rd through 6th grade guys fellowship. The counselors were excellent role models and helped me see how godly men should be like. They introduced me to Bible stories, and I began learning more about Jesus. At first I just enjoyed hearing interesting stories and miracles in the Bible, but gradually God began working in my heart and opening my eyes to the gospel. When I was in 5th grade, I began to understand what it meant when Jesus died on the cross for my sins. I committed my life to God and began serving Him through my actions. I started doing devotions and reading the Bible consistently and by God's grace, I was able to grow a lot in my knowledge of God and His Word.
In middle school, I began attending my church's 7th through 12th grade youth group called CC (Christ's Communique). When I first started attending CC, I didn't know too many people there, because they were a lot older than me. As time progressed, I got to know some brothers and sisters in Christ really well. I developed deep friendships where I had accountability for my spiritual walk during my high school years. In CC, I began leading in different officer positions and learning the importance of serving the church body. During freshman year of high school, I began sharing my faith with the people around me. It was a very new thing for me, because I didn't really evangelize in the past. God gave me courage and boldness to share the gospel with my non-Christian friends. Later on in high school though, I wasn't as passionate in sharing my faith with other people.
